Viola Bernacchi (IT), Edwin Jakobs (NL) / Computer scientists, designers e developers

RNDR designs and codes the future, by transforming data into information, information into knowledge, and knowledge into narratives. To achieve this, we develop processes, create structures, design visualisations, code programs, and create interactions. The end result can manifest itself across different media, ranging from interactive installations, to print and everything in between —often real-time. We are triggered by how information and technology transforms networks, cultures, societies, relationships, behaviours, and interactions between people. Our work is only finished by its use. RNDR was founded in 2017 in The Hague, (NL). Its main members have years of experience as partners, computer scientists, designers, and developers at LUST and LUSTlab.

What is it about?

The aim of the workshop is to explore a new visual system for the identity of Spore. The visual system works as intersection between adaptability, complexity and engaging aesthetics. The resulting framework will provide an innovative way to visually solve communication designs. Central to the definition of the visual system is the process behind the constitution of a generative and parametric pattern and its use.

The participant’s ability to program (in Kotlin and OPENRNDR) is helpful, especially in later stages of the workshop where the customization of tools is addressed. It will however not be a requirement and the workshop will be organized with programming at an introductory level.

What will we work on?

Being able to create a compelling visual system to define the identity of Coop. Spore through a participatory and experimental process. The visual system will respect the nature and core values of Coop. Spore and respond to criterias of innovation, adaptability and self-maintenance.

How does it work?

Day 1

RNDR studio presents its practice: projects and process.
Coop. Spore presents itself and its team.
Each participant presents himself briefly.

Launch the purpose of the workshop and brief the participants for the following days. Edwin presents OPENRNDR and a set of custom tools that will be used throughout the workshop.

Day 2

→ Phase 1
Works in groups to brainstorm initial ideas and research. Each group presents conceptual sketches and ideas to the others. Each contribution is added to the concept wall. Exploration and contamination between different ideas.

→ Phase 2
Use of the concept wall as a reference map to sketch individually a couple of ideas and applications. Quick presentation and group similar directions. Define a small number of directions to explore deeply in the next day.

Day 3

The whole day will be dedicated to experiment and sketch out a consistent number of ideas and directions. Participants will be able to prototype and experiment freely individually or in group combining tools and different techniques.

In the afternoon sketches are going to be collected, presented and discussed together.

Day 4

→ Phase 1
Definition of the visual system and its principles.

→ Phase 2
Final applications of the visual vocabulary.
Each group focuses on one aspect of the visual identity.
For example: animations, typography, layouts, etc.

Preliminary presentation of the results.

Day 5

Finalise the visual identity and make all the assets ready to use.
Final presentation of the results.

→ Party
